Website vs Instagram page: does a small business really need a website?

Instagram and WhatsApp are great for staying in touch, but they are not the same as having your own website. Here is what each does well — and why most businesses need both.

Plenty of businesses in India run entirely on Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp — and some do very well. So it is reasonable to ask: if customers already find you on social media, why spend money on a website?

The short answer: social media is where people discover you; a website is where they decide to trust you. They do different jobs, and they work best together.

What social media does well

  • Reaching new people through reels, hashtags and shares.
  • Showing day-to-day life — new stock, before-and-after photos, events, offers.
  • Quick conversations through DMs and WhatsApp.
  • It is free to start, and you can post from your phone.

Where social media falls short

People search on Google, not just Instagram

When someone needs a dentist in their area, a CA before a tax deadline, or a school for their child, many start with a Google search or Google Maps. Your Instagram profile rarely appears for those searches. A website — together with a Google Business Profile — is what shows up.

You do not own your account

Your profile lives on someone else's platform. Algorithm changes can cut your reach overnight, and accounts can be restricted or hacked. Your website and domain are yours — you decide what is on them and they keep working regardless of any app's rules.

Important information gets buried

Timings, address, services, fees and policies get lost under months of posts. Customers end up asking the same questions in DMs again and again. A website puts the answers in one clear, permanent place.

Trust and professionalism

For many customers — and especially for business clients, investors and parents — a proper website with your own domain and business email signals that you are established. An email from info@yourfirm.in lands differently from a free email address.

Selling without a middleman

If you sell products, your own online store lets customers browse, choose and pay without endless DMs, and without marketplace commission on every order.

The best setup: use both, and connect them

  1. Keep posting on social media to reach and engage people.
  2. Put your website link in your bio, so curious followers can see your full services, prices and location.
  3. Add WhatsApp and Instagram buttons on your website so visitors can reach you the way they prefer.
  4. Set up a Google Business Profile that points to your website, so local searchers find you too.

When you might not need a website yet

If you are testing a small idea, selling to a handful of repeat customers, or your business is entirely word-of-mouth, social media alone can be enough for a while. But the moment you want people who do not already know you to find you and trust you, a website starts paying for itself.
