Choosing a school is one of the biggest decisions a family makes, and most of the research now happens on a phone, late in the evening, long before anyone calls the office. A school's website is often the first real impression — and sometimes the reason a family decides to visit, or not.
What parents want to find quickly
- Admissions information — classes open, eligibility, age criteria, important dates and how to apply.
- Board and curriculum — CBSE, ICSE, state board or international, and what makes your teaching approach different.
- Fees — or at least a clear way to ask about them. Many parents leave sites that hide this completely.
- Location and transport — address, map, bus routes and timings.
- Facilities — classrooms, labs, library, sports, safety measures, with real photos.
- Teachers and leadership — the principal's message and faculty qualifications.
- School life — events, activities and achievements that show what a normal year looks like.
Pages every school website should have
- Home — a quick overview with admissions highlighted during the season
- About — history, vision, principal's message
- Admissions — process, eligibility, dates, enquiry form
- Academics — classes, curriculum, approach
- Faculty
- Facilities and gallery
- Notices and events
- Fee structure (optional, or “ask us” with a form)
- Contact — address, map, phone, email and office hours
Coaching institutes need a slightly different focus: courses, batches and timings, faculty, results and a quick enquiry option.
What builds trust with parents
- Real photos of your campus and events — not stock images of children who are clearly not your students.
- Recent updates. A notice board last updated two years ago suggests the school is not well run.
- Clear safety information — CCTV, transport supervision, medical room.
- Easy contact — a phone number and WhatsApp option, not just a form.
A note on student photos: get consent from parents before publishing photos of children, and avoid showing names alongside photos of individual students.
Keeping it updated without effort
The biggest problem with school websites is not the design — it is outdated information. Two simple fixes:
- An admin panel so office staff can post notices, events and gallery photos themselves.
- One person responsible for checking the admissions page and notices every month.
Mobile first, always
Most parents will see your website on their phone. Test it yourself: can you find the admission dates, the fee enquiry and the phone number within a few seconds, using one thumb? If not, it needs work.
