“How much will a website cost?” is the first question almost every business owner asks us — and it is a fair one, because quotes in India can range from a few thousand rupees to several lakhs for what sounds like the same thing. The difference is rarely random. It comes down to what is actually being built, what is included, and what you will keep paying for after launch.
This guide breaks the cost into its real parts, so you can compare quotes properly and avoid surprises in year two.
The parts that make up a website's price
Every business website, however simple, is made of the same building blocks. Some quotes include all of them; others quote only the first and leave the rest to you.
- Design and development — planning the pages, designing the layout, writing or organising the content, and building it so it works on phones and computers. This is the biggest part of the cost and the part that varies most.
- Domain name — your address, like yourclinic.in. A .in or .com domain is a small yearly cost, usually a few hundred to around a thousand rupees a year depending on the extension and registrar.
- Hosting — the server your website lives on. Basic shared hosting for a small business site is a modest yearly cost; online stores and busy sites need more.
- SSL certificate — the padlock in the address bar. Free certificates are widely available today, so you should not be paying extra for a basic one.
- Business email — addresses like info@yourbusiness.in. Sometimes bundled with hosting, sometimes a separate per-user subscription.
- Maintenance and support — updates, small changes, backups and someone to call when something breaks.
- GST — 18% GST applies to website development services. Check whether a quote is “+ GST” or “inclusive”.
Rough price bands you will come across
Prices change and every project is different, but quotes in India tend to fall into a few broad groups:
| Option | What you typically get | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| DIY website builder | Templates you edit yourself, paid monthly or yearly | Your time, ongoing subscription, limited control |
| Freelancer | A custom or template-based site at a lower build price | Support after launch, who holds your domain and hosting logins |
| Small studio or agency | Planned, designed site with setup and support included | What exactly is included, and renewal costs |
| Large agency / custom build | Complex features, integrations, large teams | Often more than a small business needs |
For most clinics, CA firms, law practices, schools and shops, a well-built 3–10 page site from a small studio is the sweet spot: professional enough to win trust, without paying for features you will never use.
Why two quotes for “a 5-page website” can be so different
- Template vs custom design. Reusing a theme with your logo dropped in is quicker than designing around your business.
- Who writes the content. Many low quotes assume you will provide every word and photo. Good content is a big part of whether a site brings enquiries.
- What is included. One quote includes domain, hosting, SSL, email and a year of support; another includes only the design.
- Features. An admin panel, online payments, booking or a product catalogue all add work.
- Speed and SEO basics. A site that loads fast on mobile and is set up properly for Google takes more care than one that just looks fine on a laptop.
The hidden cost: year two
The build price is only part of the story. Ask every provider what you will pay after the first year to keep the website live — domain renewal, hosting, SSL, email and support. A cheap build with an expensive or unclear renewal can cost more over three years than a fairly priced package.
Tip: Ask for the renewal price in writing, and confirm that the domain will be registered in your name so you are never locked in.
Questions to ask before you pay anyone
- Is the price fixed? Is GST included or extra?
- Does it include domain, hosting, SSL and business email for the first year?
- What will renewal cost every year after that?
- Who writes the content and who arranges photos?
- How many rounds of changes are included before launch?
- Can I update the site myself, or do I message you for changes?
- Whose name is the domain registered in?
- What happens if I want to cancel halfway?
